Original Wax Sculpt for Gaff Action Figure
Gaff is my favorite Droids action figure. Is it fair to name him that despite the fact that he was never released in the Droids line? Well, considering that the released figures were fairly lame, I think so. Who is your pick, Jord Dusat?

Above you see the original wax sculpt for Gaff. It's a one-of-one item, the unique hand-worked piece that would have been used to create the production figure had it gone forward to release.

When I acquired this item, it was in pieces inside of an old sandwich baggie; even the fingers were broken off. I had to repair it very carefully. Fortunately, the legs and arms were created over a wire armature, which made things a bit easier. The armature was necessary because of the extreme thinness of the figure's components.

The greenish film you see adhering to portions of the wax, the head in particular, is a remnant of the mold release that was applied to it in preparation for the creation of silicone molds. Six such molds would have been required in this case, one for each piece of the figure.

Droids was a silly line, and I think the show was mostly stupid; but if you're interested in the history of Kenner's involvement with Star Wars, it's actually very interesting -- and maybe even sort of essential. Of course, it helps that many of the figures are interesting from a design perspective, Gaff in particular.
